The Supreme Court announced today that Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who injured her left shoulder in a fall at her home earlier this month, will undergo “reverse total shoulder replacement surgery” tomorrow morning. In a press release issued this afternoon, the court’s public information office indicated that the 63-year-old justice will curtail her activities “for the next few weeks”; she will need to wear a sling “for several weeks and will undergo physical therapy for several months” but is expected to recover fully.
Sotomayor is not the only current justice to have undergone shoulder replacement surgery: In April 2013, Justice Stephen Breyer underwent a similar surgery after he fell off his bicycle near the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
